Konavoski Dvori Eco Green Restaurant

EU Energy Renewal Project for the First Croatian Green Restaurant Completed

PROJECT NAME
Konavoski Dvori Eco Green Restaurant Energy Supply Renewal
APPLICANT’S NAME
ESCULAP-TEO d.o.o., company registered for commerce and hospitality services
TENDER DESIGNATION
Increasing the energy efficiency and use of renewable sources of energy in the service sector (tourism, retail)

BRIEF PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The project implementation site was a hospitality establishment, the Konavoski Dvori Eco Green Restaurant, owned by the Konavle Municipality (which leased it to the company ESCULAP-TEO d.o.o.), and housed in a small mill immediately adjacent to the Ljuta Stream, in an area designated in physical planning documents as a protected cultural good – a component of the Konavle region’s cultural and natural heritage – and also a protected natural landscape.
The project contributed to solving the identified key problems (poor thermal protection of the hospitality establishment’s building, obsolete and energy-wasting technological fixtures and a lack of modern energy efficient technologies using renewables) which prevented the Konavoski Dvori Eco Green Restaurant from securing the status of green restaurant and operating year-round. The designation ‘green restaurant’ pertains to restaurants that contribute to the protection of nature and the environment in their operations. First and foremost, this implies the use of organic groceries in food preparation, use of renewable energy sources (sun, water, wind), the use of sustainable building materials and ecological mobile equipment, efficient water use, reduction of waste and pollution and use of environmentally acceptable inputs.
The planned project encompassed the complete renewal of the envelope of the hospitality facility, including the installation of thermal insulation on all building components. Solar panels for the preparation of hot water and photovoltaic electrical generation were installed on the two externally mounted canopies.
The heating, cooling and ventilation system was upgraded by the installation of two air/water heaters. Furthermore, the obsolete and energy-wasting technological fixtures used in food preparation, processing and storage (kitchen) and for lighting were replaced with new, more energy efficient solutions.
The introduction of a system of remote metering of energy consumption and production and a system of controlled energy gauges will be used to monitor project target indicators and the achievement of project objectives.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES AND RESULTS ACHIEVED

The project resulted in reduced energy consumption by 52.79 % (in comparison to energy delivered prior to project implementation) in the hospitality establishment, the Konavoski Dvori Eco Green Restaurant, and a higher share of renewable energy sources in gross energy consumption by 27,371.08 kWh, thus enhancing the competitive edge of the company ESCULAP-TEO d.o.o. and increasing efficient energy use in the service sector (tourism, retail), and thereby increasing the competitive edge of the entire Croatian economy.
The outcome of this project entails renewal of a part of the building’s envelope and the replacement of existing, obsolete technological fixtures with new, energy efficient solutions and the introduction of new systems that use renewable energy sources.
Successful project implementation enabled the Konavoski Dvori Eco Green Restaurant to become the first green restaurant in Croatia, which will additionally raise the awareness of guests and the public of the significance of this place and the role of the Konavoski Dvori Eco Green Restaurant in the tourism promotion of both the Dubrovnik region and Croatia as a whole.

LOOKING AHEAD

As usual, we maintain a positive attitude as we go forward and prepare for the installation of a charging station for electric vehicles.
Furthermore, the restaurant’s offer will be upscaled with a wine boutique that showcases regional and local Croatian wines. The emphasis will be on the narrower Dubrovnik region, all with the aim of offering the unique experience of Croatia’s finest wines.
We further plan to have a sales area with a tasting bar where the most renowned delicacies made by farmers from Konavle and elsewhere in Croatia can be sampled: from carefully selected wines, through award-winning olive oils and cheeses to various confectionery specialities.
